Fraud Prevention Month
Fraud is everywhere and it’s getting harder and harder to recognize as technology becomes more sophisticated and consumers rely on electronic channels more than ever.
March is Fraud Prevention Month and while we should be taking steps to protect ourselves year round, it’s as good a time as any to take stock on fraud prevention techniques. That’s why we’re offering up a few basic and easy things you can start doing today to help protect yourself.
Keep your Personal Information Private – Never give out your personal information over the phone, through email or online unless you are the one initiating contact and you know who you’re talking to.
Avoid using Public Computers to access Bank Accounts – Use only your personal devices (home computer, phone) to access your online banking or credit card accounts.
Use Strong Passwords – Don’t use passwords that contain personal identifiers such as your date of birth or anniversary. Use passwords that contain multiple character types (letters, numbers, special characters) and change them frequently.
Protect your PIN Numbers and Passwords – Never share your PIN numbers or passwords, and shield your PIN when completing ATM withdrawals or point-of-sale transactions.
Get Rid of Personal Documents Safely – If getting rid of bills, bank statements, or receipts, shred them instead of throwing them in the garbage.
Keep your Home Computer Secure – Seek out a reputable software company for an antivirus program to further safeguard your online activity.
Monitor all your Transactions – Check your bank account activity and credit card statements frequently for unrecognizable charges.
While taking these precautions doesn’t provide a 100% guarantee of safety, staying informed and on alert is your best defense! The Government of Canada also provides useful resources to help Canadians learn how to recognize and protect themselves from fraud. Visit their website here.
If you ever suspect you have been a victim of fraud, contact your credit union branch or credit card provider immediately.
